Abial Bugbee (1746 to 1824): P-124448
Abial Bugbee enlisted in May 1775 immediately after the events of Lexington/Concord. He was a native of Connecticut and joined the cause in a community effort. Pvt. Bugbee was assigned to Capt. Thomas Knowlton (who was later promoted to Colonel and formed "Knowlton's Rangers" - America's first professional intelligence corp.) Pvt. Bugbee regimented under Gen. Israel Putnam and marched to Cambridge prior to the events of Bunker Hill. On June 17, '75 he took position behind a hastily constructed rail fence on the beach guarding the redoubt's east flank. Cornwallis made 3 attacks on the position that were repulsed. The company's 2d order was to cover any retreat if the patriot lines broke which they did after running short of powder. There are post-battle accounts stating he was one of the last to leave the field throwing stones at his pursuers having his shoe buckle shot off for his efforts. Gen. Washington took command in July '75 and laid siege to Boston. Discharged Dec. '75.
